I have taken an involuntary vow of silence
\nstricken with a nasty little virus
\nthat seems to be resting rather uncomfortably
\non my voice box
\nforcing me to whisper out squeaky little noises
\nand irritating wisps of air
\nalso with a great deal of effort
\nrepeat myself several times
\nto be heard
\nI find I am wearing thin
\nso enough forcing out sound<\/p>\n
I have managed to make it through
\ntwo work days
\nand today is my day off
\nso here I am sitting
\njust
\nquietly
\nwith my book, while outside my window
\nspring is blossoming and rain
\nis falling<\/p>\n
My husband has noticed yesterday\u2019s barely touched lunch
\nin the garbage
\ntossed in on top of most of my breakfast
\nhe came in last night to find me
\nwith a small dish of ice cream
\ntrying to sooth a very sore throat<\/p>\n
Today he presents me with lunch
\na lovely half hot turkey sandwich
\nI think,
\nI barely look at it, and shake my head
\nwave it away
\n(doesn\u2019t he know..)
\nI can hardly swallow?
\nBut you need some food he says
\nyou haven\u2019t eaten
\n\u201cStarve a fever, feed a cold\u201d
\nYes I know, \u00a0I squeak,
\nbut it hurts to swallow
\nI’ll try something later
\nhow about
\n\u2018snack a laryngitis\u2019<\/p>\n
then, \u00a0he comes to kiss me
\non the forehead\u2026
\nbefore he leaves for work

and I smile at him in
\ncomfort and
\ndeep deep gratitude

he loves me
\nin all the ways
