This morning I rise early, I have a birthday cake to make. \u00a0There was a time when my kids were younger, I spent considerable time making elaborate birthday cakes the night before. \u00a0But now that they have grown it seems, \u00a0I manage my time differently. \nToday’s request, for my son is chocolate, this is easily managed. \u00a0I begin with my grandmother’s recipe, tried. tested and true. I have made this many, many ties over the years, in fact I made one similar just a week ago for my daughter.
\nOutside the window, the garden is bathed in sunlight, the sky is blue and the birds are aplenty! \u00a0I lovingly mix my cake batter and think about how very much I like this recipe, fondly remembering my Grandmother.
\nI put the cake in the oven and get on to the laundry. \u00a0My son’s girlfriend will be coming for dinner, my husband will be cooking and today proves to be, \u00a0my favourite day – family day.
\nTime allotted, \u00a0I take the cake out , \u00a0it has risen to beauteous heights and smells divine. \u00a0I set it to cool on the counter and think about my plans for decoration.
\n<\/span><\/span>Ever so gently, I tip it out onto the rack to cool further.
\nIt is then that my gorgeous cake quite gradually starts to slide. \u00a0First one side, slowly sinking as it spreads it luscious body out onto the counter top like molten lava.
\nHelpless, I watch it ooze.
\nOk, \u00a0I think, \u00a0I can work with this, \u00a0oozing chocolate still sounds good right?
\nThen with the aid of my husband, I try to move it to the base and like a rather pitiful mudslide it continues to spread itself wide and low.
\nNo,no, \u00a0NO I CAN NOT WORK WITH THIS!!! \u00a0 I am not new at this, I have made this cake so very many times, Why, why, WHY ???? \u00a0 \u00a0 Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!<\/p>\n
\nlike a little bell,
\nit rings.
\nA gentle most familiar
\nlittle tinkle,
\nand I
\ncease pulling out my hair
\nin utter frustration
\nand I resist the urge to
\ncry<\/p>\n
\nbreathe deep,
\nI take a moment
\nto feel my husbands hand
\non my back<\/p>\n
\nsmile<\/p>\n
\nbegin
\nagain,<\/p>\n
\nand
\nyet…<\/p>\n
\nwhat they say,
\nsome days are like that,
