I don\u2019t spend a lot of time with mirrors
\nnot the usual kind any way
\nI suppose some days, there are things
\nyou\u2019d rather
\nnot see
\nextra little lines and creases
\ntime\u2019s tiny little footprints
\nmaking their tracks
\nacross
\nyour face
\non the days I do wear make-up
\nit is necessary I guess
\nto have a look
\nto be sure, \u00a0I have covered up
\nand enhanced
\na little bit
\nin the right spots
\nbut then,
\nI can turn away and not look again
\nas I know, It is far too easy
\nand in our nature
\nto pick oneself
\nto
\npieces
\nAs a result of a nasty little virus
\nthat recently took up residence
\nand rendered me virtually speechless
\nfor a few days
\nI have been left with a wheezy ticklish
\nsort of cough
\nand now it seems,
\nmy lips
\nhave exploded
\nin a dastardly array of cold sores
\nhow very cruel!
\nSo
\nhere I am
\nat the mirror
\nwondering what it is
\ncausing my body
\nto be so ungrateful?
\nI have an engagement tomorrow
\nto go out
\nand next weekend
\nagain
\nand then, in a very short week
\nagain
\nperhaps then,
\nI am internalizing
\na little
\n\u2018social\u2019 stress
\nand it is possibly
\nand quite literally bubbling
\nout
\nof my lips
\nOr maybe this is all a sly trick
\nto keep one\u2019s vanity in check
\n(no delusions of perfection here!)
\nOr maybe,
\nI\u2019ve just had a virus,
\nlaryngitis and now
\na few cold sores
\nand who really needs this mirror anyway
\nI don\u2019t put my faith in you
\nthe mirrors I prefer
\nare my heart
\nmy mind
\nwindows
\nthe sun, and
\nthe sky
\nI can see my beauty in
\na flower
\nin a smile
\nin the lyrical song
\nof the little wren
\nI see myself
\nin the gentle
\nand
\nthe kind
\nand sometimes
\nin the
\ncourageous
\n\u2018Unless you look closely,
\nyou can\u2019t really see them\u2019
\nmy friend says to me,
\nfrom her kind heart
\nI am hardly bothered by what you

\nthey are there
\nmost assuredly there
\nsuch is life
\nthere are worse things
\nand aren\u2019t big plumped up lips
\nrather desirable

besides, I am through with
\nlooking at myself
\nin this lousy piece of glass
\nif you have nothing nice to say
\nmy garden
\nis calling me out
\nin the sweetest of tones
