Today begins, as many
\nmy day off, sitting to morning coffee
\nwith my husband, he with the paper
\nme with a book
\nan ad comes on the radio and a woman
\nYEEEEEEELLLLLLLSSSSSSS
\ndisturbing the soothing Philharmonic Orchestra
\nand the gentle flow of words through my head
\nI stop reading and sit for a moment
\nin wonder\u2026
\nwhy is it
\nthe world has gotten so very
\nLOUD
\na bit of unrest in my day
\nyesterday
\ncauses everyone to talk at once
\nand on top of each other
\nand
\neven though most of it was not me
\nmy ears ring a bit, and my jaw is sore
\nwe all have something
\nto say
\nlast night
\nI turned down the TV three times
\nmostly at commercials but also at a singing show
\nmy husband was watching
\nthat seemed to feature a lot of
\nshouty voices
\nit seems the world has become so very amplified
\nin our need
\nto grab attention,\u00a0 or sometimes simply
\njust to
\nfeel
\nheard
\nsome days,\u00a0 for me
\nit’s just too much
\nand if I let it
\nit disturbs my senses
\nI am by nature, a bit of a quiet talker
\ndrives my husband crazy
\nsome times
\nI would say I am by nature a bit of a quiet\u2026
\neverything
\nand so I wonder,\u00a0 what’s with all
\nthe noise?
\nand can we just turn it down
\na little
\nI take my wonderings out to the garden
\nto see what may be left
\nin the cold dampness of November
\nwhen I step out
\neven the dogs down the street are demanding
\nto be heard
\nin great volume
\nI walk softly among the fallen leaves
\nmarveling at the autumn shades
\nI watch a little chick-a-dee and smile when I
\nrecognize the soft white belly
\nof my woodpecker
\nI breathe cool fresh air
\nby the time I have reached the flowers
\nthe \u2018outside\u2019 noise has faded
\nsufficiently
\nuntil the only things I am listening to
\nare the leaves
\nmy own dog lies quietly beside me
\ncontent
\nto be
\nhere<\/p>\n
later
\nI come in
\nto do some baking
\nto make the house warm
\nand sugary
\nI turn on a little Steve Earle and turn the volume
\ndown
\nlow
\nthen I sit
\nwith my cup of tea
\nI pick up a lovely notebook and pen
\na recent gift
\nfrom a very dear friend
\nand I
\nbegin

\noffer my gratitude
\nfor wonder and beauty
\nfor kindness and
