It occurs to me this morning,
\nthat I have not spent enough time with
\nthe chickadees\u2026<\/p>\n
the cold and I have not been friends this year
\nwell,\u00a0 really
\nI am not too sure we ever were
\nas many childhood memories of my father rubbing my toes
\nwhile I cry, come to mind
\nthis winter, the cold seems to hurt
\nmy skin tingles, itches and pains
\nnot quite sure if this is yet one more result of ever fluctuating hormones
\nor just what
\nbut it does keep me from wanting to spend any more time outdoors
\nwhen temperatures are so low
\nthen I absolutely have to
\nthis morning I watch a squirrel busily trying to steal our seed pie
\nthat dangles from a branch by the window
\nand I think to myself
\nI have not spent enough time with the chickadees\u2026
\nfunnily enough, shortly after this thought occurs,
\na chickadee indeed comes to land
\nand I smile
\nwhen my husband comes in from an early morning meeting
\nI bundle myself up to join him as we attempt to make a clearing
\nin the drives
\nhe and Ted head across the street to make a start
\nthen stop to chat with our neighbour
\nI wave a hello from our side of the street, \u00a0as I move off to begin at the house next door
\nquite quickly my fingers start to hurt terribly from the cold
\nand I must go in to double up my mittens
\nI am feeling a little \u2018lightweight\u2019 with this unnecessary bit of bother
\nso I put my mind on other things and instead decide this to be the perfect time
\nto count one\u2019s blessings
\nwhen we are finished with the shovels
\nmy husband and the dogs go in, while I grab the camera
\nand instead stay out
\nheeding the pull for a bit of
\nwander
\nI stop over for a few shots of my lovely roses that have been kind enough to stay
\nwith me through the cold, sometimes colourless seeming season
\nI top up the feeders with fresh seed and a few nuts
\nfor my gang of bandits
\nenjoying the quietness of this snowy morning,\u00a0 the friends I am inviting
\nare exactly my kind of crowd
\nas we offer each other just enough space
\nfor comfort
\nbeauty, graciousness
\nand
\npresence
\nfor kindness
\nI look up at the blue sky , search for patterns in the clouds
\nand I smile at the sun
\nlet it fill me with light
\nI laugh when a cheeky branch attempts to snatch off my hat
\nand then,\u00a0 when I am feeling full
\nI offer up my gratitude<\/p>\n
because on a snowy cold morning
\nsuch as this
\nsnow sparkles, and
\na time spent with chickadees
\nreally does a heart
