This is my companion today
\nas I went out for my walk of quiet gratitude
\nin the garden
\namong the flowers<\/p>\n

this young cardinal sits in the tree above me
\nchin tilted up,\u00a0 beak open
\nand as I repeatedly snap photos
\nshe poses,\u00a0\u00a0we
\nchat
\nand I laugh and ask her,\u00a0 just what she is doing?<\/p>\n

she is hot (another terribly humid day),
\nshe is caroling joy into a bright blue sky (although she is not making a sound),
\nshe is taking time to
\nbreathe,
\nshe is definitely posing<\/p>\n

when I come in to look at the pictures of the flowers
\nand the bees
\nto see if anything today appears in focus
\nI come to these pictures of the cardinal
\nand I laugh<\/p>\n

she is breath
\nshe is joy
\nshe is pause
\nshe is wonder<\/p>\n

and right now,\u00a0 she is the brightest smile
\non my
\nheart<\/p>\n

and I
\nam indeed
\ngratitude<\/p>\n

as what a shame it would have been
\nto have<\/p>\n

missed
\nthis \u2665<\/p>\n
