Yesterday he comes in with an armload
\nof flowers for the garden
\nrealizing this as the first Thanksgiving in twenty-four
\nhe has not had to be at work
\nI suppose we thank covid for this
\nfinding our blessings in these strange times
\nmight even have been longer, except back to that
\ntwenty-four marker
\na day when I said maybe he best not go in
\nas I had been in labour for some time
\nwhen one of our daughters decided
\nto make the Monday
\nour Thanks-for-giving-us-Emma day
\nso that each thanksgiving now includes birthday cake
\nin celebration
\nof
\nnumber three of four
\nof the greatest gifts
\nreceived<\/p>\n\n\n\n
yesterday\u2019s request\u2026 \nfour magnificent
\nlayers
\nbaked with love and topped
\nwith a delectable cream cheese
\nfrosting<\/p>\n\n\n\n
let that sit sweetly..
\non your tongue<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the act of being thankful
\nthe very conscious, fully engaged practice
\nof thankfulness, is one
\nthat I cannot imagine ever being
\nwithout<\/p>\n\n\n\n
as the great blessings of everyday life
\nas well as our awareness
\nof
\nbecome more and more apparent
\nin each
\nmoment<\/p>\n\n\n\n
from the first deep breath in
\nof morning light
\nfully and completely expanding the lungs
\nfilling one\u2019s chest and
\nholding it there
\nbefore beginning
\nthe gentle slow
\nrelease<\/p>\n\n\n\n
this simple act
\nrepeated then, throughout the day
\nis not one to be taken
\nlightly<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to walk quietly through a slumbering house
\nopen curtains, raise blinds
\nstart the coffee
\nsavour
\nsilence <\/p>\n\n\n\n
to begin in kindness
\nfor the day<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to breathe fresh air, as you move
\nwatch clouds sail
\nacross blue skies, leaves burst forth
\nin brilliant shades<\/p>\n\n\n\n
plant feet
\non the ground
\nraise your face to the sun
\nclose your eyes
\ncentre, still
\nthen set one\u2019s intentions
\nto love
\nand where it may be needed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
not just because this has been deemed
\nthe day
\nfor our Thanksgiving<\/p>\n\n\n\n
but instead,
\nbecause this is a life
\nof grateful living<\/p>\n\n\n\n
made gracious
\nby
\nintentionally <\/p>\n\n\n\n
giving
thanks <\/p>\n\n\n\n

May this day greet you
in kindness
May your heart bring you
a gentle strength
and guidance
May blessings and goodness
be waiting
on your doorstep
