beginning in fact\u00a0
as a porcupine, kind of cute but\u00a0
rather spiky\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
bits of holiday detritus\u00a0
persistently\u00a0strewn everywhere\u00a0
sunless days\u00a0
in dull stretches of freeze and\u00a0\u00a0
thaw\u00a0\u00a0
when the neck of my sweater feels\u00a0\u00a0
too tight\u00a0
the strands of hair that brush my neck feel set\u00a0
for strangulation\u00a0
the skin on my face becomes speckled
in dots of sugary over-indulgence\u00a0
and the lack of personal space is much too\u00a0
close\u00a0
and somewhat stifling\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
sharp words guaranteed to
burn
bubbling up at the ready
in my head and in my throat
like a growing nausea, I use all energies
to keep them down
avoid unnecessarily releasing
quills that cannot be removed quite
so easily
without of course, leaving holes <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am breathing my way through
in deep not so subtle
sighs
these being my small attempts
at mercy <\/p>\n\n\n\n
last week, to begin\u00a0
I burned the palm of my hand quite badly
now I am bothered by the nasty scar\u00a0\u00a0
left behind\u00a0
find I am touching it more in\u00a0\u00a0
retributions of carelessness\u00a0
rather than\u00a0\u00a0
gentle kindness\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I suppose this is where the winter
sets in
the bleakness of days
the weight <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I resist the urge to power through
these shadowy days of
self-exposure <\/p>\n\n\n\n
instead I take them gently
with tea <\/p>\n\n\n\n
