it’s nearing the end of October
\nand skies have been very
\ngrey
\nwet, dreary
\ncool and windy\u00a0days
\nhave kept me
\nindoors
\nbut today the sun shines
\nbright
\na lovely surprise arrives
\nfrom a friend
\nand my wings begin
\nto flutter …
\na walk to the library
\nin glorious fresh
\nair
\nhas me shining
\neffervescence
\nI pass an angry looking woman
\ndressed all in black
\nand I try to give her my smile
\nthough I’m not sure
\nshe keeps it
\nundeterred, I have a spare
\nI breathe in
\nand look up at the blueness
\nof the sky
\nwatch a stream of white
\nsailing over
\na small explosion
\nat the tire place
\nstartles me into paying attention
\nto the traffic
\nand as I cross the street
\nI realize that I am gripping the bag
\non my shoulder
\nrather tightly
\nand my right hand is also
\nquite tense
\nthis is me in the world
\noutside of my
\ngarden
\nsmiling and joyous
\nin the beauty of
\na fall day
\nyet still
\nslightly fearful
\nof possible social
\ninteraction
\na lady on a bike
\npedals past me at the lights
\nand I smile because
\nshe looks like someone
\nI know
\nbut have not seen for some time
\nsomeone lovely whose name
\nis Sue
\nat the library
\nI relax and breathe in
\nwonder and
\nwords
\nI am quickly among friends
\nand I gather a few
\non my way out
\nI stop at the art gallery
\nto read the biographies of some
\nlocal veterans
\nand to look upon the pictures of
\ntheir young faces
\nbright and proud
\nbarely teenagers
\npossibly fearful
\nbut oh so
\nbrave
\nsome came home
\nand some
\ndid
\nnot
\nI read their names
\nand commit them to my heart
\nfrom the corner of my eye
\nI see someone approaching
\nmy space
\nthen look to realize
\nit is my friend
\nwe met
\nboth of us proud Mothers
\nof four
\nreturning to school after many years
\nit’s lovely to see her again
\nand I think I should hug her
\nbut I don’t
\nboth of us slightly awkward
\nwith small talk
\nwe exchange talk of kids
\nand say our goodbyes
\nI gather up my books
\nand head out
\nback to the
\nsunshine
\nand as I walk along
\ngazing at the blue sky
\nonce again
\nI think to myself
\nI wish I were brave
\none should never pass up
