Tamara Willems

like moss on a rock…

As the sky begins to brighten
on a beautiful morning,
through the window, I am once again watching
a robin
our resident harbinger of spring like things
today’s beauty is gathering
a great beak-full of grasses and twigs
it scritches through gardens
in search
yesterday, a squirrel in the cedar tree
trying its best to gather in a length of
the dog’s rope
I watch, wondering which of the large nests
high up in the nearby trees, will be
adorned
knowing that soon, the unfurling of leaves
will make that bit of yellow and green
rope
hard to see

despite the freezing rain and high winds
of a few days ago
it is indeed time to be
feathering
one’s nest
Hurray!
as what could be more hopeful than that

in the garden
for some,
buds are bursting
and sprouts of green are popping up
in all directions
the crocus, scilla and hellebores
all especially happy to be opening acts
the ponds are sleepily approaching wakefulness
as a few eager toads have already
bravely
checked in

camera in hand, I make some rounds today
do a little checking of my own
slight chill in the air, causing shivers with no
coat

hard you know, to walk the world
without
indifference
to care one way or another
if we aren’t all doomed to hell in-a-handbasket
hard in these times to
believe
that good will still triumph over
evil, selfishness and
calculated ignorance

while considering gardens, I read again about
the slave trade
the buying and selling of human beings
deemed to be
possessions
as well of a time of persecution
for those who love someone other than
who you may have
approved

and still today, loud voices
ego-driven and full of hate
try desperately to
claw back
surer signs
of love
and
life

at the pond, I look on lovingly
at a rock in a brilliant green covering
of moss
(knowing certainly, not everyone approves)
hand on my heart
feet on the ground,  I smile
knowing well
less poison and harsh toxicity
applied to each
fertile parcel
of earth

more
stillness
more kindness and more
love

is much more assuredly
yours
to witness

this year’s
sure signs of
growth ♥
