Tamara Willems

widening the skirts of light…

Out for my walk this morning
as Friday’s small bit of
routine
has now been determined
off to collect our farm share of
wonderfully fresh, and decidedly delicious
good things to eat
looking up at the beautiful blue
I marvel at just how often I will notice
the wispy white cloud above me
that looks to be
a wing
or a feather
comes to feel as if I
am being
accompanied on my travels
always
I will think of my Aunt Pat

home again, home again
jiggety-jig
it is also the day to check in at
my
Little Free Library out front
tidy a bit, rearrange and exchange a few
books
add a few more wee beeny-animals
an interesting fossil, a colourful rainbow eraser
some Marvel cards
and
a duck
smile inside thinking of someone’s
delight
(as well as my own)
actively a part of
small joys

another scorching hot day
it often amazes, when passing through gates
how one is instantly exposed
to the
heat

yet in the garden
although definitely still a hot one
how lovely and cool the breeze
feels
in amongst the various jungle-y areas
of our space here

first chores of the day are of course
replenishing the bird baths
being sure to keep them fresh and topped up
for drinks as well as for
splashing
and there has been plenty of both

at mid-afternoon
our resident froggy is floating quite free
in the middle of the big pond
not currently tucked safely in long stems
to the side
looks as if he too wouldn’t mind some kind of
replenishing shower to hopefully break
a little
the extremeness of the 30 plus readings

many of the birds come in spurts and starts
as they too must be keeping to
cooler spaces
two of the nesting boxes sound to be
still quite full
of little wrens, as parents can be seen
coming and going
and the chorus of hungry babies
is quite wonderful
when food arrives

the trumpets on the vine are opening now
daily
and the orioles have been joyfully
dipping in
for something sweet
and it never does take long for the hummingbirds
to find
flowers are open
our poor toads are definitely keeping to cooler
spots and only stealthily slipping in
for a swim
when a particularly curious nosey pup
is not
about
to cause bother

the duckweed which loves these kinds of
temperatures
has gladly filled in most of the entire surface
of the ponds
possibly keeping what lurks below
protected from
scorch

when I was picking up the vegetables, I thought this morning
to tell the lady in the flower shop
once again, just how lovely I think everything is
even though I don’t buy anything
it’s just a lovely, lovely
aesthetic
but I don’t…
wondering, as I go, if this would be appreciated
as intended, or fall hollow
if one has not spoken
with
purchase

while in the book I am reading
I stopped for a few extra minutes
on this,

“But I have a belief of my own, and it comforts me.”

“That by desiring what is perfectly good, even when we don’t
quite know what it is and cannot do what we would,
we are part of the divine power against evil – widening
the skirts of light and making the struggle with
darkness narrower. “

May you be well my friends,
May you be safe and
at ease
May kindness and moments that
delight
meet you

right where you are

and May you, yourself
try
to put something good
in the
world ♥
