Tamara Willems

thirty-four

Thirty-four years of
this

me and him
he
plus me
me plus
him

thirty-four
kind of
incredible, isn’t it

just the other day we stood
us two
outside the backdoor
laughing like
fools
about something I had said,
and almost instantly couldn’t remember
about something he said
then
couldn’t quite
say
and I wondered out loud through tears of
hilarity
just who, would allow the two of us
to be in charge of anything
marriage, houses, careers, four children
two cats, two dogs, two birds
who

who said, Yes to all
of this
You two… Go ahead and make a life!

while probably neither of us would willingly
bow
to authority
or someone telling us
what to do
we consciously and blissfully
stumbled in

is every day sunshine and roses
are we always in-tuned to each other’s feelings
and/or
failings
do we never ever take each other for granted
are we always loving and most
kind

no

however
when I am having trouble falling asleep
I remember precisely when
it happened
after having known each other for maybe ten years
we somehow found
each other again
and
knew

did we know we would be here
did we know things would be easy, thrilling and fun
yet also, difficult and troubling and sometimes
tremendously
sad

did we know we would be stretched and
strained
yet remarkably somehow
strengthened
and
solid

together
the thick… and the
thin

did we know,
had we known
we’d be laughing still

always enormously proud of my husband
fiercely protective of the heart he carries
inside his chest
and how right, he makes the world feel
for
me
he quite simply, is where
I
am
home

and today, as has become tradition
I am at home
while he…

he
is on a golf course somewhere

Happy Anniversary my love
always and all
ways,

and ain’t love
grand ♥
