Tamara Willems

tell me this…

tell me
what would you do
with a perfectly lovely
day off
first you wake up
with a smile
as you have been able to sleep in
until the sun is well and truly
up in a gorgeous blue sky
then very gently you move your right arm
and as you do
you check to see if today
your fingers are willing
to bend
then you think of all the things
you should accomplish
this day
like putting your son’s clothes away
that are currently still snuggled in unpacked bags
maybe clean the house
follow-up on that everlasting goal to sort
and eliminate
gather up the tumble weed tufts of
dog hair
that seem to be multiplying
plans in the ‘to do’ column
you slip out of bed
trying hard to not disturb
your sleeping husband
until the coffee is made
down the stairs
a morning kiss for the turtle
‘Good Morning James’, always the first greeting
of the day
and then the dog,
‘Hello Sweet Boy”
settle in to comfort
and sink into a really good book
converse with your husband
and swell with a gracious Love
when he
makes you laugh
until the fresh air
calls you out
through the branches of the tree
the sunlight is teasing
waiting for you
to catch fire
step out, filling to the brim
smiling wide
up into light
stop at the pond
for quiet meditation
wonder and awe
a walk through the gardens
shining in beauty
and audaciously free
the roses are refusing to hide
any bit of beauty
from the others
their blooms are bountiful
the bees lavishly bathe
in pollen
a little chipmunk sneaks in
to stuff his cheeks with peanuts
closing your eyes
the sun and breeze
conspire to make the leaves
dance in delicate sparkling shadows
across your face
hand slips into pocket
and there fingers find
your little stone
heart
the only sounds are
the grasshopper and one saucy squirrel
gratitude intoxicates
then your husband
and the dogs arrive
and you smile
while your heart
pours forth
pure
Joy ♥
