Tamara Willems

as the leaves do fall…

Feel a bit out of sorts when days pile up
and one hasn’t made the time
for writing
I have started and stopped many times,
yet as schedules continue to
change
I haven’t done much about getting anything
down

or I suppose there is that thing with
certain portions of the world
heading its merry way towards
hell-in-a-handbasket
wondering if what we are is
word fatigued (heaven forbid!)
or much rather,
opinion
fatigued

and who might even care to know
that yesterday I spotted the lovely
downy woodpecker
at my feeder
or even that, this morning the sunlight and
shadows through the leaves of the burr oak
made such a gorgeous golden light
it felt to warm you
straight through the window pane

or whether it was that you
were enamoured more by the cirrus or the
cumulus clouds of the other day
or were they possibly even
altocumulus
but weren’t they something, just the same
with that beautiful crisp white
against the
blue
and who could have blamed you for
staring

head in the clouds
so to speak

or even you know, yesterday when I came in from work
my neighbour was out with his (spoken through gritted teeth)
leaf blower
blowing his lawn full of leaves
out
in
to
the
street
and over the noise of that
hideous-beast-of-a-thing, that-can-only-cause-great-harm
to-small-beings

he was…
singing
in a joyously loud baritone
that seemed to carry its melodious way
down the street

and this morning I puzzled as to just how
that became such a thing
the clearing of one’s leaves
the need for constant
tidiness
especially when it comes to nature
when the leaves really do much for beautifying
the colour-retreating landscape
as well as
the breakdown of such
do so much to feed what lies
beneath

funny how we come to
believing in our need of controlling things
and just how they might appear
to others
how one will stand in awe at the fall beauty
while on the trees
yet,
when they fall…
they must be immediately gathered up
and out of sight
bagged if possible, so as not
to be seen
at
all

but a leaf on the wind…
if you were to stand
quite still
to watch

there happens to be
a very grand
kind of magic
in
this ♥
