Tamara Willems

and i wonder to myself…

I wonder to myself, if it will be noticed
when I head out
just past one in the afternoon
that my hair is still wet
as I have just showered, or that I
am a little bit shaky
because I haven’t yet eaten
having sat the morning, reading not just one
but finishing the first and
beginning
another

before tearing myself away
knowing I have an errand to run

the day again
is gorgeous
and going on the light
that fills me
of
two lovely friends, sending me things
that made them think of me

astonishing

I wonder to myself, if it will be noticed
that I have chosen my flow-y blue skirt with the white flowers (again)
but instead of the airy pink top, ties in the front
with the offsetting pattern, that I had decided on
I change to a softer simple tank top
in periwinkle blue
like the crayon in the box of 64
because it feels today
more like
me

I wonder to myself if it will be noticed, that I
haven’t done much with myself
that more of my grey roots are showing
than usual
that the only adornment on my face
(sans makeup)
are my sunglasses

and that just before bustling out the door
I have spotted
a simple ‘I love you’ scribbled early, early morning
on the grocery list

I wonder to myself, if you will notice
ugh.. yet one more person standing at the stop light
with their head
stuck in their phone
while instead, it’s just me
trying to put down words in my
notes
before they
escape
me

or how I do flinch
when I come to a cross walk
and wonder, just for a split second
if the vehicle fast approaching
will indeed
stop

before it reaches me

how periodically I’ll hold my breath
while walking through clouds
of cigarette smoke, taking the street
knowing allergies will
revolt

yet, I wonder too
if you notice
how very kindly things can change
to take you
out
of your head

while approaching the corner
as I’m greeted by the lovely smiling face
of a woman and her child
and joyfully the woman says,
I love the pink in your hair!

and how every wonderful bit of kindness
for this day
carries me
in
sunshine
all the way

home

where I am greeted
by a monarch, and the oh-so-lovely
yellow swallowtail
like maybe they
had been

waiting ♥
