The other evening, just about dusk
I pass by the door, and spot
out front
our resident brown bunny
through the small window, on the stairs
I watch bunny-bun-bun
nibbling plant stalks left in an
unruly garden
yesterday, early morning
I watch the squirrels make their way
to investigate the open feeders
and smile, thinking how lovely and polite they seem
pausing to put small front paws together
as if making sure,
it is still
ok
to sample
looking up through the window, I marvel at a branch
on the crabapple
that looks just like the head and nose
of a deer
dusted in a layer of snow (as if fur)
with long up-stretched, far reaching
antlers
the downy woodpecker comes
to the suet
small joys
in a wintry landscape
this week, at work
where I work in organics
ladybugs are brought in, as
nature’s bit of
pest control
unfortunately, the non-nature bits
the yellow sticky cards
have attracted quite a few
and it pains me greatly, that I am
unable
to free them, without harm
I am able, however
to pry open the live mouse trap
and set a rather plump toad
out
tiny flags of freedom
all around
by weeks end
concerning news
about a dear, dear friend
falls
to the pit
of my stomach
and today, I am thinking of ways
to offer
loving
kindness
because I myself, am
needing
and chances are
some sacred soul out there
is, just this day
needing
too
aside from the constant, bizarro, distressing news cycle
what I’m wondering is
How
are you keeping?
don’t tell me your opinion, your
politics, your
shaded views…
tell me instead, about someone you love
but tell me
why
tell me about someone
astonishing
in your life
and what they mean
to you
tell me of kindness
not myth, or urban legend
something you may have heard
tell me something real
or
tell me what hurts,
tell me… where it is
you don’t
feel
whole
tell me what you think might be
missing
tell me something open and honest
tell me something
soft
how about someone you
admire
always have, but
never said
don’t tell me, grand ideas of rights
and wrongs
tell me, how it is
you might think
to
put something good
in the world
tell me about love
about light
and something about
delicate things
that withstand
the cold
tell me something
true, to you
